Recently I had lunch with a good friend. She said something to me that felt like a truth bomb had exploded in my heart. “Your true people will always celebrate you. When you are with those that do not celebrate you then those are not your people. And it’s not personal. It just is.” Of course! I already knew that but hearing her say the words really burst through my walls. Especially the word “celebrate.” Not acceptance or closeness but celebration. It’s a whole other level. An outburst of deep and true excitement for everything you are. Wow. Have you ever really wanted to belong with a group of people (or person) who did not celebrate you? Did you keep trying, hoping one day they would? This can be so painful. Self-doubt can begin to flare-up. You begin ruminating on your own inadequacies. What’s wrong with me? Am I unlikeable? Should I change?
Have you read Don Miguel Ruiz’s book The Four Agreements? The second agreement is Don’t Take Anything Personally. How is it possible to not take anything personally? Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in. When we take something personally, we make the assumption that they know what is in our world, and we try to impose our world on their world. -Don Miguel Ruiz This doesn’t mean that we should allow people to abuse or verbally combust all over us. It can affect how we react though. If we feel good about ourselves internally then it is way easier to not be hurt by the explosions (or cold shoulders) of people who don’t necessarily mean any harm. Some people just aren’t capable of being what we need. Some people can't celebrate us. It’s not personal. It just is. Yoga is celebration. In yoga, we salute the sun, move like animals and ignite our senses. We look at ourselves and honor what we CAN do. We move, we care, we rest. We begin to know that we matter and that surrounding ourselves with people who celebrate us matters. My hope is that every time you take a class at The Yoga Casa you feel celebrated. Because we love seeing you. We love sharing our practice with you. We celebrate you just as you are.
